A tense 18-hour standoff ended with a man being taken into protective custody Monday.
Pitkin County sheriff's deputies took a man into custody Monday after he threatened law enforcement and citizens.

The incident began Sunday evening when the Aspen/Pitkin County Communications Center received a report of a man threatening suicide, according to a press release. Authorities reported that the distraught man threatened to harm local law enforcement and citizens. Deputies from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, plus police from Aspen and Snowmass Village, as well as members of the Aspen Fire Department and Aspen Ambulance District, responded to the man's residence on Owl Creek Road, located about 2 miles west of Aspen's city limits.

The distraught man 36, sequestered himself in the residence and was later joined by another individual who reportedly hiked into the area and was able to slip by the containment perimeter authorities established during the standoff. The man's family and friends assisted in the negotiations. Owl Creek Road was shut down in the morning to ensure public safety.

The man, who the sheriff's office did not identify, was taken into custody at 5:38 p.m. The incident ended peacefully; no one was hurt.
