Dick Jackson, 60, reportedly launched off a spot in the Mount Sopris area and, later, clipped a tree that forced him into a downward spiral. He landed between Dinkle and Thomas lakes, the sheriff's office said.

Mountain Rescue Aspen dispatched two teams of eight members and four ATVs to locate Jackson while several hikers in the area stayed with him until help arrived.

The accident was called in at 12:45 p.m. and about an hour and a half later Flight For Life Summit County was able to reach the injured Jackson.

He was flown to St. Anthony’s Central in Denver where he reportedly underwent back surgery Sunday.

Jackson is an expert paraglider and outdoorsman. He is the owner of Aspen Expeditions.
