Aspen Skiing Company puts early Ajax opening on ice

After flirting with cranking up the gondola on Ajax this weekend, the Aspen Skiing Company has backed off the idea and has decided to stick to its original scheduled opening on Thanksgiving.

“There has been a lot of talk about an early opening on Aspen Mountain,” Aspen Skiing Company Vice President of Mountain Operations Rich Burkley said in a statement released on Wednesday. “We are as anxious as everyone to get up on the hill and make some turns, and the past week has proved to be a great one for both snowmaking and natural snowfall with close to 20 inches falling on the summits of Aspen and Snowmass. This is a great start and we have terrific conditions on the upper portions of our mountains. However, the total product is not quite there, including top-to-bottom skiing, for an early opening.”

Thanks to this week's snow, top-to-bottom skiing does, however, look likely for Thanksgiving.

A benefit for the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club is planned Nov. 24 — a day before the scheduled Thanksgiving opening. Those interested must pay for a ticket that day even if they have a season pass. Proceeds benefit ski and snowboard programs for the valley's youth.

Otherwise, Aspen Mountain, aka Ajax, is open to anyone willing to hike or snowmobile for their turns.
