Another one of the many colorful characters in Aspen lore died Monday after a ski accident on Aspen Mountain.

Peter Greene, 77, passed away at Swedish Medical Center in Denver after suffering a broken neck in a bad fall on a run served by the Ajax Express lift, or chair 3, on Aspen Mountain on Sunday.

Greene, who was born in Holland, had spent several decades in Aspen. He owned and operated Bonnie's restaurant on Aspen Mountain and the Golden Horn restaurant downtown (now the site of Takah Sushi) and also started the Cork & Cleaver and Pedro Verde's restaurants along the Front Range.

Ski patrollers reported Greene was not breathing when they responded to the snowy slope where he had collapsed but Aspen Skiing Company officials say they were able to revive him. It was unclear why Greene collapsed. He was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital where doctors discovered fractures in his neck. He was then airlifted to Denver.

He succumbed to his injuries on Monday afternoon at the Denver hospital.
