Aspen firefighters saved a woman from a burning apartment Monday, along with two birds, a dog and a rabbit.

Smoke was reported at 1024 E. Cooper Ave. a little after 7 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they erected a ladder to the second-story balcony of Unit No. 5 where a woman was trapped. The woman was safely removed from the burning apartment and transported to Aspen Valley Hospital for treatment of possible smoke inhalation, authorities said.

Two birds, and at least one dog and a rabbit were also rescued alive, they said.

The blaze inflicted about $100,000 of damage, according to Aspen Fire Marshall Ed Walraven.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities indicated that it may have started from an electrical problem in the building's sauna on the first floor. Sixteen members of the volunteer fire department extinguished the burn.

No other injuries were reported.
