The Aspen/Snowmass Women’s Pro Stage Race, presented by UnitedHealthcare, includes 39 of the world’s top female professional riders competing for a prize purse of $9,000.

It is the brainchild of Aspen cyclist Jessica Phillips who finished ninth.

Aspen residents Anne Gonzales finished 13th and Abigail Mickey placed 19th.

The three-day women’s event opened with a time trial from the base of Aspen Highlands to the scenic and iconic Maroon Bells.

Kristin Armstrong took the lead Tuesday in a circuit race through the rolling topography of Snowmass Village. Gonzales dropped to 25th, Phillips to 26th and Mickey to 32nd.

A women's criterium race through the streets of downtown Aspen is scheduled Wednesday — the same day the men's riders will descend on Aspen in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

Proceeds from the race will be used to support young women’s athletic programs in the Aspen/Snowmass area.
