McInnis, Dudley beat the heat in Aspen

Oregon gubernatorial candidate Chris Dudley, a former Portland Trail Blazer, didn't score any political points coming to Aspen last week.

Apparently Aspen is a great place to escape both the summer heat and the heat of a gubernatorial campaign experiencing some turbulence.

Former Colorado congressman Scott McInnis last week skillfully ducked mounting media fallout from his ongoing plagiarism scandal by attending the Republican Governor’s Association meeting in Aspen. He sidestepped a more public function Thursday by participating in a panel discussion on Friday. He’s since fully returned to the campaign trail in his primary battle with Dan Maes.

Also in attendance in Aspen was former NBA basketball player Chris Dudley, a Republican candidate for governor in Oregon. Dudley, deemed a political lightweight by some political observers, skipped out on a longstanding tradition in his state to visit Aspen: the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association kickoff debate with former Gov. John Kitzhaber, the Democratic candidate.

Saying he would be on family vacation in Colorado, Dudley – a career 3.9-point-per-game scorer in the NBA – did not indicate he’d be attending any political functions, which caught Oregon political pundits off-guard. Needless to say, the former rebounding force but awful free-throw shooter, didn’t score any points on the campaign trail.

Other GOP gubernatorial hopefuls reportedly in attendance were Susana Martinez of New Mexico, Bill Brady of Illinois and Brian Sandoval of Nevada – all of whom had already secured primary wins.
