Aspen's congressman apologizes for daughter's emails

U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, who represents Aspen and most of the Western Slope, wrote a letter of apology to the House Ethics Committee to apologize for emails his daughter sent to Congress.

Tipton's daughter, Elizabeth, 22, sent emails to lawmakers to promote her employer, a telephone conference provider called Broadnet Inc. that is reportedly used by hundreds of members of Congress. Tipton’s nephew, Steve Patterson, owns Broadnet, which contracts with a vendor, iConstituent, to provides politicians with specialized telephone town hall meeting services.

“In the course of Elizabeth’s duties she mentioned to several House offices that she is my daughter," Tipton wrote. "This reference was made casually in introductory emails purely as a point of reference to both Republican and Democratic offices. ... I believe it to be an improper use of my name and I would like to apologize and assure you that it will not happen again."

Riding a wave of Tea Party momentum, Tipton unseated Democrat John Salazar last year. He claimed the emails did not violate ethics rules but apologized nonetheless.

"If there are any other measures that must be taken in this regard please let me know and I will be happy to do so," he added.

Democrats wasted no time in jumping on Tipton's apology.

Colorado Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio issued a public statement Friday ripping Tipton for “unprofessionalism."

“After five months in office, it’s time for Scott Tipton to get control over the functions of his office and start acting like a Congressman,” Palacio said in the statement.
