More than 80 elementary and middle school students made their trip to the Aspen School District campus by bicycle or on foot on Wednesday as part of a year-long effort by the District and the City of Aspen Transportation Department to reduce school-related traffic congestion.

Organized groups of students were guided by Aspen Police, Pitkin County Sheriff and City of Aspen staff along with volunteers and parents. The students participating in this Walk and Bike to School event departed a variety of locations in the Aspen area on foot or on bicycle after safety demonstrations.

“It is a wonderful when we see students, staff and parents modeling behavior that is healthy and benefits our planet,” said Aspen Middle School Principal Tom Heald. “I hope that families will continue to consider their transit, walking, biking and carpooling options and continue to seek transit solutions that make a positive impact in our community.”

The Walk and Bike to School event was part of a year-long partnership between the Aspen School District and the City of Aspen aimed at encouraging alternative transportation. City of Aspen Transportation Programs Manager Lynn Rumbaugh said: “This is the first year the program has run on this level so we’re thrilled to see such enthusiastic participation from the students, parents and schools. We hope that learning about different modes of transit will inspire the kids to make their own choices about how they get to school and around Aspen.”
